New old alleys
When it became clear that the soil of Qatar was rich in oil, the country changed rapidly. Sandstone cottages became skyscrapers. And traditional markets gave way to giant shopping malls. But not Souk Waqif. The Arab souk has managed to maintain its place in the heart of Doha. Gradually, the tangle of zigzagging streets, alleys and paths became increasingly tangled. In 2006 it was therefore decided to break down the souk and rebuild it. Yet the atmosphere did not escape from the alleys. The old wooden beams were used for the reconstruction. And also the bags full of herbs, scented perfume shops and racks full of traditional clothing returned to the new old alleys.
