STERLING HIGHWAY
The route from Anchorage to Homer leads past picturesque beautiful lakes, mouths of icy cold streams and rivers, mountains and bays. On the other side of the Cook Inlet loom high, snowy mountains, the silhouette of an eagle is depicting itself against the sky. Then the panorama opens over Kachemak Bay and Homer, the town where the road ends.
ALASKA'S PLAYGROUND
In the lee of the Kenai Mountains there is a remarkably mild microclimate, and the contrast with other, colder parts of Alaska will pleasantly surprise you. This is a wonderful environment for activities such as hiking, fishing, kayak boating and camping.
BIRD'S PARADISE
In early May Homer wakes from hibernation, when the return of tens of thousands of migrating shorebirds is celebrated exuberantly during a four-day festival: the Kachemak Bay Shorebird Festival. This period is a highlight for bird lovers! Even after most migratory birds have disappeared back to other places, this remains an exceptionally bird-rich region. While walking on 'Homer Spit',a striking headland, you will see many types of waders. During an excursion by boat you will see various types of puffins and cormorants. Eagles, especially the American eagle, are also prominently present in the region.
PARADISE ACROSS THE STREET
On the other side of the bay is Kachemak Bay State Wilderness Park,a very accessible nature reserve. In peace you can observe birds and other animals. From a kayak, on foot, or from a campsite or cabin in the middle of nature.
