The largest island in the world
Kalaallit Nunaat, "the land of the people," has one of the largest ice sheets in the world. While the interior is largely inhospitable, the waters around Greenland are rich in belugas, blue whales, bowhead whales, minke whales, narwhals and sperm whales. Many Arctic bird species and animals such as snow hares, polar bears and reindeer forage along the remote coasts. The Scoresby Sund , the largest fjord system in the world, is a maze of snowcapped rocks, ice floes and flats suitable for Zodiac landings and scenic nature walks. The town of Ittoqqortoormiit is the only permanent settlement in this remote area. Be sure to visit the Inuit, the original inhabitants of the Arctic. Their colorful coastal settlements are only accessible from the sea in the summer.
