The classic choice for polar expeditions

The m/v Plancius. the oldest ship of the Dutch shipping company OceanWide Expeditions, has become the classic choice for polar voyages. The ship is extremely comfortable and cozy, but it is not a cruise ship. The voyages in the Arctic and Antarctic are and will remain primarily focused on an active and educational expedition travel program, with as much time spent on land as possible. The Plancius is well suited for this: the ship has spacious, open decks on multiple levels, with walking space around Deck 4, and also has benches on deck that allow you to enjoy the scenery and nature outside as well.

Comfort and Character

The ship has a restaurant on Deck 3 and on Deck 5 a spacious Observation Lounge with bar and library. The large windows in the Observation Lounge offer fantastic panoramic views. The best view is always on the outside deck or bridge. The comfort level aboard the "Plancius" can be classified as "comfortable hotel standard." On board are a fleet of powerful zodiacs, allowing quick landings on the shores for all passengers. Fast zodiac transportation can be guaranteed by the use of two separate gangways and a zodiac platform, which can also be used for special outdoor activities such as kayaking

TIPS TOPS M/F PLANCIUS:

  • Expedition ship m/v Plancius accommodates 108 passengers in 50 passenger cabins, all equipped with private toilets and showers
  • There is a choice of four, three and person cabins with porthole, double cabins with window, deluxe double cabins and double superior cabins
  • Please note that a small number of cabins have partially obstructed views due to the ship's design requirements. For example, visibility from some windows may be partially obstructed by the gangway
  • Attend in the large observation lounge or lecture room some (multilingual) lectures and presentations about the areas to be visited
  • Experience and discover the extraordinary polar nature through an active travel program, where as much time as possible is spent on land. Therefore, sailing distances are kept as short as possible so that the focus can be on nature-related activities
  • The m/v Plancius was built in 1976 as an oceanographic research ship for the Royal Navy and was given the royal title "Hr. Ms. Tydeman."
  • The ship was completely rebuilt in 2009 as an expedition passenger ship. It complies with the latest SOLAS (Safety of Life at Sea) regulations.
  • The vessel is equipped with a diesel-electric propulsion system that significantly reduces engine noise and vibration
  • The m/v "Plancius" is manned by 20 crew members, 20 hotel staff, 8 expedition staff (1 expedition leader and 7 guides/speakers), and 1 doctor
  • The Plancius is equipped with 10 Mark V zodiacs including 40 hp 4-stroke outboard motors and 2 starboard side gangways for fast zodiac operations
